About
Monika Thapa
I'm Monika Thapa, a storyteller moving between music, film, painting, and poetry. My creative journey began early, with poems and rhymes I started writing in fourth and fifth grade, encouraged deeply by my Nepali teacher Miss Bhawana Neupane. Even though I stepped away from it for years, that form of expression stayed with me and eventually evolved into everything I do now. In many ways, my poems became music over time.
I began exploring animation, then moved into theater, where I made my acting debut in An Inspector Calls at Purano Ghar Theatre. Gradually, I found myself drawn deeper into filmmaking, writing stories and shaping visual narratives as another language of emotion.
My short film Strata, originally a learning experiment inspired by The Big Shave, evolved into an original work and was selected for Nepal International Film Festival and Lift-Off Sessions: First-Time Filmmakers. That experience shaped my approach to storytelling. Instinctive, minimal, rooted in feeling.
Alongside film, music remained constant. In 2025, I shifted fully toward my own voice and began releasing original songs. I independently created the 2D animated video for Naboleka Boli, followed by Jindagi Cheez, Ae Budo, and Kalila Chhati, which became a raw expression of my response to the Gen Z sociopolitical protest moment in Nepal, resonating with listeners who connected with its honesty.
Currently, I focus on music as my primary medium, where sound, image, and emotion converge. Across all my work, I'm drawn to subtle moments, quiet intensity, and honest expression that wants to stay with you.
